Mechanica

mechanica_01 from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.
I love these little magnets, they're not very strong though....fun to play for an hour anyway

Life drawing at Sculptors...

A bit wild and woolly because I'd had a glass or two of wine and finding it difficult to care about anything.
Couldn't determine if model was Loretta or loreena
..... anyway I've drawn her before- twice I think.

Turkey knows its Christmas....

turkey_run from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

And is running.

I think model will need to be modified or swapped out for a version with flappable wings so it can fly ingame.

Flockin Birdies.....

Jive Turkey

turkey_walk from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Turkey walking animation by me....

guess who did the model/bones...?
Milenko

A little bit of skinning funny business on the legs I can see(which I didn't see because the bones were obscuring it.).....anyway.

Hard to get the feel of the legs when the feet are solid paddle type things-
so you can't do the foot spread when they contact....

Fox on the run...

Same fox- this time running.
Animation by me.

Foxy

fox_walk from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Animation by me-
Model/texture/bone by Milenko

Hmmm tail is kicking a bit- needs a bit of rotation up the tail to smooth it a little

Might need to lift the back feet as they swing through just a tiny bit

Run rabbit run

hare_run from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Did this run before the hop- again couldn't get the curve of the back/movement of the hips right.
Its way more extreme the way the hips move on a hare- but the biped has its root around there- so any wild moving/rotating has to be compensated for by adjusting the free legs (sliding key feet stay still but theres not many foot contact periods) and the spine....
So if you want to rotate the hip region forward or back you have to counter animate everything.
Possibly if I try again and animate the biped root thing first then the spine and then do the legs I might get it right-

Hare today- gone tomorrow

hare_hop from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.
A hare hopping animation by me.

Model texture bones/biped by Rob Mangano and Milenko

Arrangement of bones in the hip/biped root bone thing made things tricky- has to be an approximation  because its nothing like the flexibilty of the hare (like cat really).

Elk walk

elk_walk_fixed from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Animation by me,-
Model and texture initially by Rob Mangano-
with a bit of texture tweak and replacement bones by Milenko

*edit*- bah I can see a stray key as the front right foot is about to lift.....
I'd stuffed up as I was shift copying keys in max- basically keys weren't unselected when I moved some different new ones and messed it up and didn't notice til a few saves later- then aw it an tried to sort it....obviously missed one bit.
I'll fix it and repost

Oh look- a Bison running

Bison_run from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Well that's galloping really.

Rawhide!

Bison walk from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

A bison animation by me- model and texture and bones by Milenko- for the ECO game.
I've actually been doing a few anims the last 3 weeks for the game - so I'll render them out to show.

Ad in progress

Pain_all_1 from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Bit of animation by me. Minus all the supers.
(Transparent images mapped on the boxes were pre-existing- (by the Post Lounge?) and the female model was pre-existing.)
Actually first time I'd tried cloth in Max. Hadn't really figured the 'editing the simulation' bit though.
Odd bits need fixing- like morphs needed to fix the skinning on the shoulders....
anyway.
Had a whole bunch of issues around scaling the figure- its one size "in the box" an another when it jumps out- and  of course  CAT rig and cloth sim don't like being in an animation with uniform scale in it.
Also they haven't finished making changes to the whole thing .....adding logos etc..
Ended up scaling the world instead......
Progress I guess.

Birdies

Life drawing Kurilpa

Arrived a bit late...
model had very red (dyed?) hair

Rough is the new finished

Out of time- last week

Well that's a selection of less than half the drawings- I actually had two or three rough options for each story- so actually if I were more decisive I could had had them more finished...
oh well.
The trouble is often a rough seems promising and then you realise it a bit more and see that maybe the other option was better....
I could only do line drawing sort of things in the end instead of adding the blacks or shading the way I'd wanted....

A Rough for How to Fake A Fairytale

One of the interior images- rough

Some quick covers-How to Fake A Fairy Tale

Only a little bit of fixing in Pshop so  far....
Did quick drawing and just started colouring...
somehow only once I'd tried to fill things in the wrongness of some aspects showed...
I am a bit frayed- I've had late nights trying to get things done....
It was a good effort for a few hours on an afternoon though.. and considering how much time I've spent since march doing  watercolour
(ie 2 days)

Grumblings

Dear Void
Well so much for trying new things,
Like trying to stop being a perfectionist-
Whats wrong with being a perfectionist- well if you can't do it perfectly- or be an expert in it before you start  you are inclined not to begin in case you fail.

Trouble is not being a perfectionist- like showing work in progress to people who don't understand work in progress- or taking a chance not knowing how to do it at the outset..

So I've tried to lose that this year a bit- god knows I've posted enough rough stuff here .

Its been hard this year - I like learning things but there has been so much to catch up on.
Trying to maintain the beginners mind.
Anyway so in the process of working on a job lately I've had to try and catch up on 3dsMax - and bunch of stuff in it I hadn't looked at in a long long time (seeing as often you just use a subset of features depending on your role)>

I really don't like attempting something where I don't know what I'm doing or how I'm going to do it beforehand- its something I never used to do-
and in a way it held me back......

The hardest bit is wondering if people understand?

It feels like last year I had lots of ideas (for books ,comics, games written down) but nothing come of them,
This year it feels like a lot of learning but no payoff (financially).

Findings:-
The CAT rig is a flaky piece of crap- my initial optimism was misplaced.
I'm only using it in a basic fashion but that is enough to reveal its dodgyness.
Spending time in 3ds max makes me realise how much I enjoy drawing more or learning or doing actual animation and actual stories,
not stupid pieces of advertising crap however much moneys worth  they might be.

I like stories- and funny things- and funny characters- at least I'm finding out for sure what I like.

I am interested in animation-
its the life force sucking software esoterica I do not like.
Particularly if it only is half baked- like 3dsmax seems to be still.
Whereas Toon Boom I'm very interested in and I'm kind of anxious because I haven't gotten back onto it and trying a proper character and scene with what I'd been learning.

For example- why doesn't Maya export to a 3ds max file or vice versa given they are owned by the same fucking company?
Why?

I realise dear Void I am only talking to myself-
The stats say 400 views for most posts but that must be just about 0 real people looking .
I look at the blog stats- well at least bots and spiders like me,
I guess google is analysing it so it can post stupid crap ads in other things like youtube.

A few Sydney Pics

I was at the SCBWI conference in Sydney last month-
here are a few photos.
Favourites from the Gallery.
Top one by Bertram McKennal,
bottom one by Sydney Long.

Pictures of Sydney buildings
Thought this looked like a cactus- pricks are on the inside though- bdum tish
Loved the colour of the city in spring
Dawn from the hotel room
Lovely old homeless guy and his beautiful soul of a dog
Monolith- tombstone building
Old and new

Reaching for the sky- on the left pointless accumulation of things- on the right a tree

Lovely simple flowers- the sort of thing you can't have here in Kingscliff because some white trash will come and destroy it
