Watercolour before breakfast

Hadn't done anything in a while,
so started something Wednesday morning....
having difficulty getting up in the morning-
well early enough to do this before my 'work day'
so didn't get very far...

but seriously and sadly its just about time to get the glasses I think-

getting old sucks

Spoonman

Stacktest from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

A rough test for an Inner health ad....
Just in case you are wondering what I'm up to

Getting my goat

Mountain_goat_walk from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Well Rob's goat.
I think the model is  by Rob Mangano-
animation by me.
No sort of side to side movement on  hips or shoulders on this or the Bighorn sheep yet- don't really have any reference to see how much would be enough- hopefully the spine and hip movement is enough to cover it visually.
(Ah hadn't brought feet closer to centre line yet...kind of landing straight down from bind pose which is usually a bit wide for walking.)

Anyway.....don't get any hate mail from angry sheep-
or anyone else for that matter

Bison fun

Bison_attack from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.
Well a bit of a charge and return.
It would be better if it could do a short charge and stop there instead of having to return to the start position. Needs more skid, pause after the charge before the move back...anyhow WIP

*edit*
Well I tweaked it a bit- but a its bit problematic-I wanted to try and rotate the spine a bit but it was set to euler- which is quite clunky and unpredictable on biped it seems- but changing it to quaternion creates a corrupt max file when it saves....
a bit floaty too in bits

Run Otter run, otter run run run

Otter run from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Animation by me - model and skel by Milenko.
(A few unfixed skinning niggles by the look...anyway)

At least this little run says "otter" more than the walk- ....feels better
*I've tweaked the skinning- so I'll rerender and put it up- mainly the back legs - but its one of those situation where without some sort of morph to fix the deformation it will never be 'fixed'

Tortoise hideaway

Tortoise_Hide from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

One good turn deserves an Otter

Otter Walk from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Actually I've just tweaked this- the hips and tummy weren't moving side to side enough-
I was about to start doing  the run and saw a clip front on with more waddle/waggle-and it looks better than the more straight top downish one I'd seen as ref.
so I'll rerender and repost it under this one

Otter Walk 2 from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

I guess the trouble with doing a walk cycle is that Otters never seem to walk in a dull repetitive cycle- they're constantly jumping and bouncing around- and ducking and diving and swerving....

Elk for ECO

Elk Liedown/Getup from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

A liedown/getup anim for the Elk for ECO.
A bit pragmatic looking and not so lounging- but get it in the game and see if it works first then make it more relaxed. (Also hard to know how much effort programmers are willing to put toward the animals and animation state machine niceties so get the basic function in.)
Model and texture by Rob Mangano- skeleton by Milenko.
A straight render  o it has some of the buffer keys between idles.

Bit of wierdness

the drawings are odd too....
Well the lat 4 weeks has been mainly doing Eco anims,
and studying Toon Boom, a
nd starting to look again at Unity (to help with the Eco work but also as an ouput for the animation I might do) .....
Also looking at the output from ToonBoom to Unity...
Its a shame it can't just create something that the Unity camera can see and can be messed with in Unity- like a Fbx or something....
I think MOHO says it outputs an FBX to Unity...
does make you wonder whether you might just make a '3d' 2d character in Max or Maya after all
Also need to look at Unitys 2d anim offerings...
I guess Toon Booms use of shearing and non uniform scale probably means you'd need some special mesh renderer or something still.....because it looks like unity doesn't like that sort of thing  ...
well most 3d programs it used to be if you wanted non uniform scale on a hierarchy it might be trouble....

Wolf-a walk-( its a bit stalky)

Wolf Walk from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.
(I'm going to redo this so its a bit more easy going as a general walk )

Fox

Fox Liedown and Getup from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

That ECO fox- gettin down and gettin back up again
A few pauses in the render where I'd 'buffered' copied keys of and end pose etc....just a straight render of the Max scene.
Only a 'breathe' and 1 longish variation of idle yet for this and some other animals...
3 is the magic number though- so hopefully once these anims are in they can be fixed/tweaked and the extra variations done.

Hard to counter animate when the root in in the hips of an animal...also when theres not many spine bones it gives the game away too....
Still.....

Elk

Elk Attack from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

An attack for the Elk in the  ECO game....well a first pass-
its hard to make the "jump forward and attack and jump back " look plausible
Probably what needs to happen is a 'charge' running animation and they just run into you....

annyway if you hadn't guesssed I'd been doing a bunch of these animation the last month...
.mostly a bit underwhelming but necessary bits for the game

Progress

Goblin prog from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Doh before breakfast

Watercolour before breakfast-
this time the shot of it where it had potential,
then the after where I'd stuffed it up because I didn't have a clear idea in mind.....

Need to be free enough for stuff to happen
because thats watercolour-
but not mentally out to lunch

ah well

In other news still pottering on that goblin throw anim after doing my daily eco anims.

Getting ideas out

goblin_throw_wip from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Another idea in progress ...trying out blocking timing in storyboard pro then starting to do lines for those keys in Toon boom- ultimately then breakdowns and inbetweens too...

Watercolour before breakfast 2

Did a little more....
funny how watercolour seems to be a constant state of trying to fix what you did before or what you've  just done.

Watercolour before breakfast

fetch_progress from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

And a bit of progress on goblin fetch scene for lunch.
Realised I should have sorted rough/loose  version completely before tying down any details...
all good practice though.

Goblin Walk

goblin_swayin' from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

Little rough test walk...
Have to say I really love doing the rough anims in Toon Boom- the combination  of the vector strokes and the transform tool with the on-thefly-pivot means- if you do your drawings in a constuctional way- its easy to tweak/rotate limbs without necessarily redrawing- and rescale things if you've drifted too big.

Well 2 weeks of school holidays

Rough turns

rough_half_turn1 from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

A start on doing character for trying out in toon boom- get  the turns,
Will try to add rough mouth shapes for the turns and do cleaner rough hand feet shapes.
then clean up and chop up I guess
...then rig up.

Fresh

Subway test from Lachlan Creagh on Vimeo.

A potential ad appeared potentially and disappeared just as quick-
but coincided with me finishing Over is Out (pretty much) and starting to get back onto the 2d animation learning thing
So a few little tests and muck arounds.....

Fish girl

Another bit of symmetry fun...
actually testing out sketchbook on this Cintiq mobile studio to see if its a goer...
looks like it is.
Well a bit distorted really- but then so am I- and its only getting worse each time I look in the mirror.
So knees don't match ankles-forearms long- possibly shins long-
but I don't care.
Nude?
....because I can

Half an hour doodling

Just to blow off steam..
a frustrating week trying to colour/finish the Over is Out book.
